The Boston Marathon – April 20, 2009
Covenanters Running to Bless Children Living a World ApartFor more than 30 years
Community Covenant Church of Hopkinton, Massachusetts (CCCH) was blessed by the fact that the
Boston Marathon began in Hopkinton and required lots of parking spaces. Year after year children and youth from this East Coast congregation have been sent to the Covenant’s
Camp Squanto and to
CHIC with monies raised through Marathon parking. But that all ended after 9/11 when increased security restructured race day parking. However, CCCH has been blessed once again through the Boston Athletic Association who gifted them two annual “Runners’ Numbers”; reserved positions in the Boston Marathon that can be used to raise more funds than those early car parkers ever imagined!.
This year, Dr. R. Boaz Johnson (Professor of Biblical & Theological Studies at
North Park University) and Heather Karlson (Director of Christian Education,
Faith Evangelical Covenant Church of Wheaton, IL) will be running the Boston Marathon for Community Covenant. Both are accomplished marathoners who have used their athletic gifts to aid various ministries over the years. This year their efforts are taking on special meaning thanks to a vision Dr. Johnson received after preaching a sermon at North Park on the life of Josiah.
Josiah was only 8 years old, when God began using him to change a whole society. At age 18, he caused a huge revival to take place in the whole kingdom of Judah.
Dr. Johnson’s dream is that God will raise a huge number of Josiahs through our Covenant Churches, and through the work of our sister churches like the
Hindustani Covenant Church (HCC), in poorer countries like India. When Dr. Johnson was 8 yrs old, he saw his friends taken into all kinds of horrible forms of slavery. His prayer is that God will use the money we raise to eradicate all forms of slavery, and enable us to train our young people, so that they would learn to eradicate all forms of injustice and slavery in the world.
So, in addition to raising money that will affect Covenant children and youth through summer camp and CHIC ministries, at least half of all the monies collected in 2009 will be donated to help children in India through the ministries of the Hindustani Covenant Church. And if, by God’s grace, donations exceed campership needs, the remaining monies will be sent to India.
Covenanters feel in their hearts what the life-defining Word of God proclaims, that our blessings from God come so that we might share those blessings with others . Will you offer a financial gift today for our Marathon runners, so that children living a world apart may be connected by God’s blessing, and perhaps become the Josiahs of a new generation?
Let us encourage Boaz and Heather with our support
as they run 26.2 miles for children and youth on April 20th.
Thank you in advance for your contributions!
